10 Dec 2008 Google Maps… Big Brother is Watching
 |  Category: All Things Tech  | Tags: ,  | Leave a Comment

Looks like the Google van has been through Kremmling in the recent past.  Here’s the driveby photo of my house!  You can even see our dog barking at them in the yard, although not in this picture…

I suspect the driveby took place sometime about one year ago.  The new school is still being built and the old school is still standing.  There is also no snow on the ground so it’s between 12 and 18 months ago.

Neo2 Laptop

Neo2 Laptop

Today at work I ordered a Neo2 Mobile Laptop Lab for the classroooms.  The Neo2 is an Alphasmart device and is from the same company as our reading software Accelerated Reader- Reniasance Learning.

They sent me two of these units to test and we were impressed.  I gave the unopened box to one of the the fifth grade teachers and he just ran with it, even with no training.  The run on three AA batteries for a full year so you don’t need to worry about recharging.  They’re geared directly toward education with writing in mind.  They have over 300 writing prompts built in to get kids excited about learning.  The Superintendent was excited to see this program moving forward and is looking forward to having a cart of 32 for the school to use.

Read more about them at http://www.renlearn.com/neo/ .

08 Dec 2008 Ubuntu 8.1 Intrepid Ibex
 |  Category: All Things Tech, Featured  | Tags:  | Leave a Comment

m1210-xpsWell, I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 8.1 on my Dell XPS laptop.  I must say that it was the easiest install to date!  Everything worked, even the media player button and volume control buttons and the scrolling sections of the touchpad.

Well, everything worked until I put a DVD in the player.  It brought up the movie player, but wouldn’t play the movie.  Its most likely a codec thing and I didn’t try another DVD.  All in all, very impressed.  I would use this over Windows Vista… more…

 |  Category: Almost Daily, Shawna  | Tags: , ,  | Leave a Comment

We had Shawna’s family birthday party on Sunday Dec 7th and it was by far more fun than the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

We cleaned the house in the morning and started lunch of taco salad (I still need to post a recipe on allrecepies.com).  Howard, Cindy, Shanon, Rhea, Dave, William, David, and Kira came over.  We ate taco salad and then opened presents.  Shawna got several gifts including a new Mongoose bike.  more…

06 Dec 2008 Shawna’s Birthday
 |  Category: Shawna  | Tags: ,  | Leave a Comment

Trena and I took Shawna out for lunch to the Mexican restarant “Los Amigos” for her birthday on Thursday.  It’s been a tradition for us to take each of the kids out for lunch on their birthday.  It’s kinda special for them because they get to leave the school and it’s just them with us.

06 Dec 2008 Wood Stove Glass Broke
 |  Category: Almost Daily  | Tags: ,  | Leave a Comment

Bummer!  The front glass on the door of our main source of heat got broke on Wednesday.  Evidently one of the pieces of wood was too long and when the door was swung shut it broke.   Getting a new glass will cost about $130 and take over two weeks!  This right before Christmas and at the coldest temperatures we’ve had yet.  Oh well, what can you do?  I’ve ordered the glass and hopefully it will be here soon.

06 Dec 2008 XBOX Broke
 |  Category: Almost Daily  | Tags:  | Leave a Comment

Oh no!  Today we got the three red flashing lights also known as the “red ring of death” on the XBOX 360.  This is indicative of a hardware problem!  The XBOX only has a one year warranty, but this issue has a three year warranty so it’s covered.  The only bummer is that now I need to send it back to TX for repair and that takes 2-3 weeks.  This puts us having the XBOX back AFTER Christmas!  So much for getting XBOX games as presents…

02 Dec 2008 Open Office 3
 |  Category: All Things Tech  | Tags: , ,  | Leave a Comment

While reading one of my favorite magazines, “Windows IT Pro,” I found an article announcing the completion of Open Office 3.  I’ve been waiting for this for some time now.  The new version promised to have the new Microsoft Office 2007 document format support and to run natively on Mac OS X without X11.
